Sleep Problems? You MUST Read THIS!
Last week I told you about how having sleep apnea – a condition that causes loud snoring and obstructs your breathing – can send your risk of developing dementia through the ROOF.Â
Now, more research shows there’s more to know about this dangerous condition.
You see, a new study found that one of the most common ways to treat this disorder could be failing countless patients.
Luckily, there is a solution… and it’s easy to get your hands on.
Here’s everything you need to know.
If you have sleep apnea, chances are you’ve also got a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine. This device uses mild air pressure to keep your airways from collapsing at night. Â
But if you’re using the wrong type of mask… all this effort could be for naught.
There are two types of masks used with CPAP machines. The oronasal mask covers your mouth and nose and is typically used by people who breathe through their mouths. And the nasal mask fits inside your nostrils and is typically used by people who breathe through their nose.
And as it turns out… one works BETTER at relieving OSA symptoms than the other.
In a new study, Australian researchers had 14 patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) use a CPAP device with an oronasal mask for half the night and a nasal mask for the other half. Scientists used air pressure values to asses airway collapsibility.
At the end, they found that participants experienced a significant increase in airway collapsibility when using the oronasal mask.
This means you could be wearing an uncomfortable mask all night long for NO REASON.
Because the more often you stop breathing in sleep… the higher your risk for Alzheimer’s, heart issues, and diabetes.
Even worse? Previous research shows that using an oronasal mask leads to less CPAP use, a higher instance of slowed or stopped breathing in sleep, and increase CPAP pressure requirements. Â
If you’re currently using an oronasal mask, it’s time to talk to your respiratory therapist about switching to a nasal mask.
And if that’s not possible, have them adjust your pressure requirements as needed.
