In the new study, researchers randomly assigned 91 participants with obesity and prediabetes to consume extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) – a type of oil rich in antioxidants – or common olive oil (OO) with fewer antioxidants for 30 days.
All participants were allowed to use as little or as much of their designated oil during the study period. And the groups swapped oils after a 15-day washout period.
At the end, they found that when participants used EVOO they experienced the following results:
- Improved inflammation and oxidative stress markers,
- Increased levels of antioxidants,
- A greater decrease in lipids,
- Lower blood sugar levels,
- Decreased BMI,
- And significant weight loss.

Experts report that EVOO works because it contains two polyphenols – called oleocanthal and oleacein – that are responsible for these positive health effects.
